Nigel Haigh, Honorary Fellow and founding Director of IEEP. Nigel is recognised as a leading authority on the development and application of EU environmental policy. He has been the author and/or editor of the Manual and its fore-runner 'EEC Environmental Policy and Britain: An essay and a handbook' since 1984. Nigel has been appointed by the European Parliament to the Management Board of the European Environment Agency. Previously he was a Board Member of the Environment Agency (for England and Wales).

David Baldock, Director. David has worked at IEEP since 1984, becoming Deputy Director in 1992 and Director in 1998. Prior to becoming Director, he led IEEP's programme of work on agricultural and rural environmental issues. As well as being an authority on the CAP and the environment David has worked on the implementation of EU environmental legislation, on different aspects of enlargement, and on EU strategy with regard to environmental integration. He also has an active interest in sustainable development and the external dimension of European policy. He is an Honorary Research Fellow of the University of Cardiff.

Patrick ten Brink, Senior Fellow and Head of the Brussels office. Patrick is an environmental and natural resource economist and has worked for over ten years on environmental policy and economics. He has worked extensively on policy instruments - notably on environmental taxes and on voluntary agreements - and with particular experience in the climate change and industrial pollution areas, notably relating to the energy sector. He has also advised on the process of implementing EU legislation in the Candidate Countries as part of their accession process. Patrick has worked for UK government agencies, the European Commission, European Parliament, European Environment Agency, the World Bank, as well as for the private sector. He has published widely on environmental and energy issues as is the editor of the book: Voluntary Environmental Agreements: Process Practice and Future Use (Greenleaf publishing).

Clare Coffey, Senior Fellow. Clare is from a legal background and has worked at IEEP since 1994. She is responsible for general EC and international environmental law and policy, as well being a major contributor to the Institute's work on the Common Fisheries Policy. Clare also works on 'horizontal' issues, such as EC funding mechanisms and institutional arrangements, and environmental integration into other policy sectors.

Dr Andrew Farmer, Senior Fellow. Andrew is a biologist by training and specialises in EU legislation in relation to water and air pollution, and pollution control. Before joining IEEP in 1997, Andrew worked for English Nature as its atmospheric pollution specialist and sustainable development co-ordinator; as a Research Assistant at both the University of Wisconsin, USA and Imperial College, University of London; and as a Research Associate at University of Florida, USA.

Malcolm Fergusson, Senior Fellow. Malcolm has worked for IEEP since 1993 and leads research in transport, energy, environmental indicators, green accounts and noise. Prior to working at IEEP, Malcolm was the Director of Earth Resources Research.

Vicki Swales, Senior Fellow. Vicki started working for IEEP in 2003 and specialises in agriculture and rural development policy. She also has a strong interest in the environmental aspects of food production. Before joining the Institute, Vicki was Head of Agriculture Policy at the RSPB . She was a member of the Government's Task Force for the Hills in 2000/1 and retains a strong interest in farming in upland areas. Vicki is currently an Independent Director of Assured Food Standards and is responsible for advice on environmental matters.

David Wilkinson, Senior Fellow. David has worked for IEEP since 1990 and has particular expertise in relation to EU institutions, spatial planning, EU funding for the environment, Structural and Cohesion Funds, environmental auditing and reporting, and environmental information. Prior to working at IEEP, David worked at the Planning Exchange, Glasgow; and as a Senior Lecturer in Politics and Government, the University of Hertfordshire (formerly the Hatfield Polytechnic).

Clare Miller, Research Fellow. A lawyer and conservation scientist by training, Clare joined IEEP in 2004 and is leading the Institute's work on biodiversity and nature policy.  Prior to working at IEEP, Clare was employed by the New Zealand government working on invasive species policy and threatened species management.

Dr Ian Skinner, Research Fellow. Ian has worked at IEEP since 1998 and specialises in transport policy and air quality issues. Prior to joining IEEP, he has worked at both the Bartlett School of Planning, University College London and the Centre for European, Regional and Transport Economics (CERTE) University of Kent.

Agata Zdanowicz, Research Fellow. Agata is an agronomist and agricultural economist by training. She joined IEEP in March 2004 with a background in integrating agricultural and rural development policies in Poland and the EU and the administration of SAPARD programme. Before joining IEEP she worked for the Scottish Agricultural College, the Polish Ministry of Agriculture & Rural Development and for the Agency for Restructuring & Modernisation of Agriculture.

Claire Monkhouse, Research Fellow. Claire joined IEEP in 2001 after working for a local authority in the Policy Unit, and later as a business environment adviser on an EU funded business outreach project. She has a background in geography, environmental management, auditing and environmental policy, and covers strategic EU affairs.

Harriet Bennett, Research Officer. Harriet, a conservation scientist, has worked at IEEP since 2000, specialising in agriculture and rural development issues in Central and Eastern Europe. Prior to working at IEEP Harriet worked in the policy team of various environmental NGOs, covering issues such as EU enlargement, pre-accession funds, rural development, agriculture and nature conservation.

James Brown, Research Officer. James has a background in fisheries economics, policy and management and joined IEEP in June 2003. He has worked for NGOs and government, previously being employed by the Department for International Development (UK), based in Uganda.

Dawn Haines, Research Officer. Dawn joined IEEP in 2003 and has a background in Environmental Management and an LL.M in Environmental Law. She specialises in transport but also has a keen interest in social corporate responsibility, trade and the environment, intellectual property rights and international environmental law. Prior to joining the IEEP she worked for two different local authorities carrying out work on school and workplace travel plans and travel awareness issues.

Peter Hjerp, Research Officer. Peter is an environmental chemist by training who has since specialised in environmental policy. He has worked on a number of projects related to structural funds, environmental assessment and integrated pollution prevention and control. He has been an Associate since 2000, and joined IEEP as a member of staff in 2004.

Catherine Bowyer, Research Officer. Catherine joined IEEP in 2002, having previously studied Environmental Sciences. She covers information in the Institute, and has completed work on waste management, the implementation of EU policy, pollution and ecological risk assessment. Prior to joining IEEP, she worked for a local authority and an environmental consultancy.

Martin Farmer, Research Assistant. Martin joined IEEP in 2004 and specialises in agriculture and rural development, as well as covering information in these areas. A geographer by training, Martin previously worked for University College London's Research Unit for Rural Europe (RURALE).

Marianne Kettuene, Research Assistant. Marianne started at the IEEP’s Brussels Office in 2005. She holds a Masters degree in ecology and she is specialised in issuesrelated to conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. Prior to joining the IEEP team she worked on diverse projects in Finland, Belgium, the Netherlands, Senegal and Peru. At the IEEP Marianne works mainly on biodiversity and nature conservation. In addition, she also has interest and experience in issues related to biodiversity and development cooperation.

Martina Herodes, Research Assistant.  Martina joined IEEP in February 2005.  She has a background in business and marketing with a keen interest in environmental issues and new technologies.  She is currently contributing to a broad range of research work and assisting with information management.

Tim Collins, Tim, currently studying at LSE, was an intern with IEEP for three months over the summer of 2005.
